EAD usage after 6 years on H1

Hi,

Just want to find out if anything needs to be done specifically, to start using EAD.

I have completed 6 years on H1 and I am now working with an extension, and my EAD got approved last week.

Does this mean I just continue working, and when my H1 extension expires, I cannot renew it for another year, but start using my EAD ?

Can I still renew my H1 ? (not that I want to, just want to know)

Thanks!

LC_Virginia,
You can get the H-1 extension provided you did not use your EAD.
The moment you use your EAD your H-1 will become invalid.

"Using EAD" means when you inform your employer that you will be using your EAD henceforth and they start using your A# number from EAD and inform the payroll. Because using EAD benefits the employer in a small way. Your social security benefit contribution is 16% (8% - you + 8% - employer) from your paycheck if you are working on your H1-B. If employer uses EAD for payroll purposes then they do not have to mandatory contibute towards your social security which leaves you to contribute the remaining 8% (employers share). You loose your 8% this way.

CIS is also informed that EAD is in use.

I hope this answers your question.

Thanks.

You need to fill form I-9 to use it. (Fill it and send it to your employer - you are done.)

You can get H1 extension as your 140 is still pending.

Can I still renew my H1 ? (not that I want to, just want to know)

Clarify please.

Thanks for the responses.

Jharkhandi, by asking "Can I still renew my H1" I meant whether I can get another year extension or not. (I-140 is pending, and I am in my 8th year already)
You answered my question !
