EAD/SSN for L2 visa holder

Hi,

I am a L2 visa holder and I recd my EAD about 2 months back. I then went to the local SS office to apply for a SSN. I was told by the officer in SS office that my EAD record is not shown in the online INS system. Hence she sent copies of my EAD and a form filled by me to the INS office and told me that once the INS office enters my record, the SS office would send me a notification and would process my SSN in about two weeks.

Its been about a month and half since I heard anything from either INS or SS office. I called SS office about 3 times and each time I was told that they are not in a position to do anything as the INS has still not entered my records in their system.

I then called INS office in Charlotte, NC. The first time I was told that they were not aware of anything wrt EADs. Hence I called them back the next day so that I could speak to someone who is knowledgeable about this. Again, it was not of much use since the officer was not sure about the next step and just told me that I should visit Charlotte and meet someone at the front desk. I don't seem so convinced with this answer.

I would appreciate if someone could guide me as to what should be my next step. I am holding a EAD card for more than 2 months now and it doesn't serve me any purpose.

Thanks.

Did SSA give you a receipt of your application? It takes 6 weeks to get SSN these days and it also depends on SSA office. Once SSA office gets verification from INS , they will send you a letter stating that SSA has received your application and is currently processing your application . It takes anything between 4 days to 14 days from the date of this letter to get SSN card. Normally ins REPLIES BACK IN 4 WEEKS.

You should visit your local SSA office and request a receipt of your application. You are supposed to get something in writing which says that you have submitted application for SSN and which you can show to prospective employer.

I hope this helps.:)
