EAD SSN and H4

My wife is on H4. She wants to get Social Security Number (SSN) once she gets EAD.
I want to know does use of EAD to get SSN means her status is EAD or is she still on H4?

The fact that EAD is required to get SSN, does it mean she is on EAD? or is she on H4?

I was told that one is said to be using EAD only when you use it to get on payroll of a company.
