You'd better do it now. You can not walk into local INS to get a EAD right away unless your EAD application with INS is over 90 days. In other words, EAD application always starts with INS.
If indeed there is a paralle processing of 9/10 and VSC usually approves each batch of cases in roughly reverse order, you'd better do it now to avoid problem. Who knows! Both you and I (same RD as yours) should send I485 package just one day earlier so that we are in August batch and probably already get the card now.

That is NOT correct. Some local INS office (eg: Boston) accepts walk-in application for EAD. I got my first EAD this way and I'm planning to renew my EAD only 3 weeks before my EAD expiration date.
This is true for Boston office even after Sep 11 and official processing time for EAD is 1 day.
However, in order to renew EAD at Boston office you must be living within jurisdiction of Boston INS office.
I dont think any other INS office in east cost provide the same, Kansa city, Cincinaati are some of the few offices in west coast who provide EAD same day.

My EAD is expiring in January 03 and I wanted to know if they process the renewals also there..
Or is it only for first time issue of EAD. Do you have any knowledge about this?

if anyone in the same situation about interim EADs at local INS
My company while applying I-485 in Aug 2001, applied EAd for my wife telling that there is no need of EAD for me as I have Visa upto Nov 2003. So she got it on Nov 1st.
After waiting for 90 days ( I did not apply EAD at all), I went to Local INS in Indiana and showed them the I-485 reciept and applied and got it within 1 hour of waiting which is expiring in November 2002.
Hence we thought of applying for renewal. Can I get one from Local INS again. This time we are not in Indiana but in North Carolina. I did not use the previous EAD till today. My wife worked on EAd for some weeks here.
First time, even attorney told that for me there is no need of EAD and did not send me the form and signature card to sign.Now On repeated requests, I do not know why my company is not talking about this. I don not know if I contact my company's attorney, whether I can get any response. Because he is not a kind person. So just trying through proper channel. Can we both get interim EADs from North carolina INS?
