My wife and I are in the similar situation as yours. Our 1st EAD expired before the second one arrived. I called IIO after the first EAD expired and explained my situation. She kindly expedited my EAD renew, which arrived a week later, the new date starting immediately after the expiration date of the first one. The IIO also said that as long as you filed your renewal before the expiration date, you will be fine. But given that IIO often contrdicts each other, I am not sure how true that is. You best bet would be trying to call IIO and ask for an expedition--you may not always get it, all depends on who you talk to--nice person or nasty one.
