EAD or H1 extension: Which is better

I have to apply 485 (I-140 approved). Whether I should apply for EAD also. My H1 is expiring in may 2004 and can be extended 6 more months (considering 6 years limit) or may be one year (on the basis of approved 140).
My question is whether I should switch to EAD in May 2004 or should I get my H1 extended.
Experts pl advice on pros and cons of both situations.
