I guess your employer is trying to save some money....thats all... anyways..from your perspective even if you have an EAD, it comes handy only when your I140 is approved...or rather its safer to use only when you have your I140 is approved and 485 is pending for more than 6 months and you want to change the employer. OR if your H1 is expired and cant work anymore on H1 then in that case also you can use your EAD to work... bottom line is that EAD is not that of a big deal...it is also approved in relatively short period of time...so I guess just hang on for a while and wait how your I140 & I485 goes....once they are approved you should be able to get the EAD without any problem...
