EAD and SSN for spouse

Hi

My wife is on H4, and recently we applied for I-140 and I-485 and received EAD against the AOS application. Since my wife does not have a SSN, we applied for her SSN against her EAD. The officer at SSN office said that they need to wait for confirmation of EAD and her status from INS. More than 2 weeks have passed but nothing has happened.
* How much time does it generally take for INS to validate her EAD ?
* Is there a way by calling a number (at INS) or otherwise to expedite the process so that the SSN may be processed faster ?

In San jose, I didn't face any problems for my wife's SSN. Just went one day applied it. They mentioned that it will come in two weeks but it happily arrived in the mail the 5th day.
