EAD and Government Job

I am currently working on EAD (WAC 03029*****) and don't expect to see an approval notification in the near future.

I have applied for a City job and chances are that I may get an offer soon. The application said that I need to present a proof of elligibility to work in US at the time of offer. I have assumed that EAD card should suffice this requirement. Since this position is in Police department, it involves extensive background checking. I am wondering if not having permanent resident status be considered as a reason for not offering me the position.

I would like to know if anybody is working directly for government using EAD. Would the expiration date on EAD card trigger a refusal?

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

I also work for the state goverment and i am on EAD. Unless the job requirement specifies that only permenant residents and citizens can apply, EAD is accepted as eligibility for employment. Just make sure that you keep renewing it on time,as they won't wait for you even a day if the EAD expires.
All the best.

Consideration of a future employment authorization expiration date in determining whether an individual is qualified for a particular job could be an unfair immigration-related employment practice.

EAD and Governemt Job

SuttiGC,

Thank you so much for your reply.

The elligibiltiy cirteria does not ask for only permenant residents and citizens. So, it seems like my EAD status may not be a criteria for refusal.

Thanks again

Thank you ItsComing. I guess, I shouldn't expect City to practice unfair hiring process. It seems like I am worried for no reason.

Thank you

So far I know from my colleague.
Extensive background checking is very important.
And it has some level for that. For example, for Federal jobs you have to top level clearance which comes after like 15-20 yrs of exp.
so when they say background check make sure what leve of security clearance they are talking about.
This is not to afraid you.
But trying to just let you know.:o

Naah, unless you are working with higly confidential cases or with very sensitive issues they won't ask us for top security clearances, and i am sure that for that kinda job, they will only hire citizens( federal jobs are only for citizens, not for us). But for goverment jobs, they do a very formal and strict checking with references and past experience noted in the resume.

reach_honey, you are probably right.

Actually, this position involves access to some of the Police department applications and data. What I understood during the interview is that, the background check would be similar to that of a police officer's position. It seems like it is going to be both personal and employment verification. Obviously, they haven't found any body locally (citizen). I have provided an employment history of 6 years here in the US and Canada. My resume clearly shows that I have been living in the US only for the past 28 months. If that is not sufficient, they may not consider me for further interviews or whatever the process is. If that is the case, there is very little I can do about it and I am not going to break my head over it. I just don't want to lose this opportunity because of my AOS.

Hey, thanks for all the input guys!

FYI

Sharing my experience on City employment process -

EAD turned out to be my least of worries. Here goes the background check ordeal -

Checked all my previous residential addresses in the past 10 years. Asked for references in each neighbourhood

Credit check

All asset verification and income management info including car payments and monthly expenses

College professor references

Parents, siblings and friends references

All my previous employers got pages of documents to fill up about me. Questions I believe included, if I ever lost my temper! That one was a difficult one to answer for my siblings!

Involvement in accidents, driving records, official transcripts ...

Finally after about 45 days, everything was cleared and I got an offer.

Hoping programming for police department won't be as exausting as the background check!
