E-verify company and pay issues

I have a question. I am on OPT-extension EAD, and need to work with an e-verify employer as per my status. One company (A) hired me as fulltime, and then I got to know that they are not e-verified and so I told them that I need to work for an e-verified employer, and they really wanted me to work with them, so they moved me to a different company (B) who was e-verified and made me as their contractor and this non-everify company (A) used to pay to that e-verified company (B) and that company used to pay me. After I was moved to the e-verified company (B), the non-everified company (A) still kept on paying me as direct deposits in my bank, and now after 8 months they are coming behind me to get their money back. Please let me know any advice on this. The non-everified company (A) has never emailed me in this regards, they always preferred to talk on the phone and has left no evidence of they moved me to e-verify company (B), etc. The only evidence in my hand is their offer letter that they had given me when I joined their company as fulltime and they have left no evidence of they moved me to a different company who was e-verified. Please let me know if its appropriate for them to take this money from me?

If you were paid by both A and B for the work you did, you are the same as a thief accepting pay for which you were not entitled. You should have immediately reported the error. Repay them immediately. They could take legal action against you.

If you were paid only by the non-everified company, you are working illegally under the terms of OPT-EXT. Make arrangements to return the pay to A and get paid by B.
