DV recipients in hard times

Some relatives of mine got DV 2009 and they finally made it to the U.S. last week. Unfortunately, their sponsor is in no position to help financially and they spent every bit of money they had on the trip to America. They have fallen on hard times and they are wondering if there is a governmental, NGO, or non-profit institution that helps immigrants in need until they can stand on their own two feet.
Has anybody here come across similar situations and if so how did s/he overcome them?

Thanks in advance.

gctz79,
Most of the medium size or large cities in the US have services (mostly NGO) that cater to new immigrants. A lot of times they will describe themselves as 'catering to refugees' but they will help you out if you are a new immigrant. In the very least they will point you in the right direction especially one is when starting out in the US. They are the best option for new immigrants that need to orient themselves to life in America. Got questions about subsidized housing, medical care, school systems, legal issues, e.t.c ask them, coz they probably know. Also, even if the organization is affiliated with a certain religion, they are usually ready to help regardless of your religion, race or national origin.

My best advise to your relatives is: Never ever ever be afraid to ask for help if they need it. If they need to figure out something and absolutely can not find someone else to help - go to a police station and ask them to advise about where to go with their questions.

Best of luck to your relatives.

Thank you very much for the response, Dematra!!

I did a search for organizations that cater to refugees and found a few of them in the city where my relatives are. Now, it's time to make some calls.

If anyone knows of any organizations that can help, please let me know.
