Hi, I am a DV2010 Winner CN:2010AS00005xxx. I am in the United States on Student Visa (F-1). I need to submit the I-485 (Application to adjust status) and need to know if i need to send an Affidavit of support? I am confused on this issue (as someone told me that the US goverment is sponsoring the program, so you don't need an affidavit of support), please clarify if i would need to submit the Affidavit of support while being in the US? Thanks.

Nov, 13 (2008): Application for DV-2010 sent
May 4 (2009): First NL sent by KCC
June 29 (2009): KCC sends letter to pay DV Fees

Basically from what i research in the forum about Dv 2009, we don;t need to mail Affidavit of support along with I-485. Also you can take a look into USCIS web site. It doesn't request the Affidavit of support with I-485. However, the from would be request in your interview. I believe you better mail out the I-485 form first. Then you prepare the Affidavit of support for interview.

Thanks for the reply June620. I am planning to send my papers by Oct 1. From what i read on the 2009 forums, it also seemed like that the interview letter is generic and it asks for the Affidavit of Support! Wonder if they actually look at it at the Interview. Also, if someone can shows financial support via bank account and employment letter, would it suffice or an Affidavit of Support should be prepared regardless?

It is not completely generic. There is a common part of course, but required documents may be different for individual letters. I was not asked for affidavit.

As many people believe, unless you are told to get this affidavit by your IO, and given that you have enough funds, affidavit of support is more for your peace of mind. There are many cases when it was not required, and people (including myself) did fine without it. I had a job offer and a title deed for my interview, no accounts and no affidavits.

Thanks for the info masematn. I will be giving my bank account info and my part-time employment as research assistant at the university and hope that it will be enough!
