I remember reading that an american citizen who also holds citizenship of another country would lose american ctizenship if he/she held/contested for a governement office in the country of dual natiohality/citizenship. Therefore, I was surprised to read in the NY times coverage of the Democrats abroad voting that the Italian sports minister who has dual citizenship cas her vote in Rome.

Guess that depends on the country and whatever bi-literal agreement there might be.

i.e. I have a South African friend who is US citizen as well, but can't get a govt. job, because he holds two passports.

On the other hand, it wouldn't make much sense for the Germans to allow dual citizenship and accept as a reason to be able to get govt. jobs, if it would be impossible to do so.

I think there is more to it then we are commonly told or able to discover easily.

Holding public office in another country is indeed grounds for revocation of US citizenship. But the revocation is not automatic; the US government would have to initiate court proceedings against you. So until that is done, they still hold on to their US citizenship.
