DS-230 Part 2 has question 31 that asks if you would like a SSN issued to you. Has any one said yes and how long did it take to get the SSN?

Are you better off saying no and applyind for the SSN from the local SSA after arriving in US on immigrant visa?

Thanks a lot

DS230-II and SSN #

You better off by checking the box for SSN, since it is optional. It makes no difference by not checking it off. Anyway after coming to US as PR, you need to reapply for the SSN to remove the 'Wrok' statement from your current SS card.

Even though you said 'Yes', you still need to apply for that since SS office will need your I-551 copy from your passport.

Dear Svj:

Basically my question was in the context of family based immigrants coming to US for the first time. Therefore, they would not have SSN to have the conditionality lifted.

However, they could not even begin looking for work till they got the SSN. Therefore, I wanted to know if checking of the box would speed up the process of getting the SSN at the earliest possible time.

From what I remember, the Immigrant visa application DS-230 is contained in the visa "packet" issued by the consular post abroad. I am assuming that it goes through the same bureaucrats who process the plastic card. We all know how long it takes for the Green card to come! .

Thanks
