DS-11 (passport appl.) A# question

In the DS-11, there's a box for Alien #. Do we need to fill that out given that we are not technically "Aliens" anymore?

One other question: My name in my N400 appl. and Natz. cert. is "John Allen Doe". Can I fill out my DS-11 as "John A. Doe"? I don't want my middle name spelled out on my passport - that's why

No, but you still have an A#. We put ours there.

This has been asked several times. The consensus is "well, if they are asking citizens for an A#, they must want us former aliens to put it there - why else would they ask (native born citizens don't have one)".

Fill out two copies of the form, one with John Allen Doe, and one with John A. Doe. Hand the John A. Doe one to the passport "acceptance agent" (which could be someone at the post office). If they take it, good. If not, pull out the second copy.

Flydog is spot on. If we are not required to put the A# on there, why would the field have been there to start with? Who else would ever have had an A#? Even though you naturalized, the A# still belongs to you (your past:D). Seriously though, yes, you should put in your A# in the appropriate field.

Regarding shortening your middle name, you are legally required to put in your full middle name not the initials. The DS-11 form clearly states to put in the middle name - not the middle initials.

But what if you don't put the A# on there? How would they know....? Unless it's on the Natz. cert (which I'll get on 5/11/2007:D ).

I guess, this really makes me cringe (not that I am averse to having my A#) - on one hand we are American citizens all one and equal with no discriminations.... and on the other hand, they want to remind you that you are still an Alien by asking you for the A#. Why else is it relevant when you have a new Naturalization # on the Natz. cert? After all, "Aliens" don't have a right to fill out a DS-11 until they become "citizens". .... Ridiculous!

Technically, your application may be considered incomplete. Because the processing unit will clearly know that you are supposed to have to an A# since your supporting document in a naturalization certificate not a birth certificate. It is very logical - not ridiculous at all.

Yup, it's in big red numbers on your natz cert. Think of it this way - it makes it easier and *faster* for them to check the validity of your natz process.

Yes, it is on the naturalization certificate, so in a way they could get it from there. They probably use this information to verify you are a citizen, it is like your SSN, but to traceback to your naturalization. Just think of someone who might have been a citizen, then stripped of citizenship (voluntarily or not) and then tries to renew a passport. Through the A# they can query USCIS to verify that your citizenship is still valid :( and you thought the tether to USCIS was really severed after the oath, unfortunately they own you for life. Well, I am exaggerating a bit ;)

which number then

So......... given that our USCIS roots are now on the Natz. cert in BIG RED NUMERALS, what's the significance of the Naturalization number (other than to denote the # of the cert)? Seriousely, what does that number mean? There's really no application process to back it up since the whole N-400 is tagged with the A#. So, are we saying that even after Natz. the A# is still the master?

There is no question of master or slave. Consider it to be a way to link to your past. Since you are not a born citizen, there has to be a way to track down your roots.

Well, my guess is USCIS has this fat ol' folder containing your entire immigration history stored away in some dusty archive, index by A#...

The other explanation is that there is a limited class of individuals called "non-citizen nationals" (American Samoa and Swains Island) who are eligible for a US passport. Maybe they have A# also? http://travel.state.gov/law/citizenship/citizenship_781.html
