I thought I would share my drivers license experiences. Each state is different so we thought we would give our experiences in case anyone else is in the same boat.
First was obtained in Florida, pre sept 11th on J1 and J2 visas. Process was the same as for US citizens.
When these expired after six years, we had H1B and H4 visas. We had to renew our licenses at an 'approved" DMV and had to show proof of legal residency-we were givena temporary license for 30 days (piece of paper) and then one was mailed to us after 30 days. it was only valid up until our H1B expired. These expire in December and the florida DMV have told us that we would not be able to get a license based on our EAD's and pending I485 (?????).
In the meantime, we have moved states- in North Carolina, the experience is totally different- they did not even ask for any INS docs- we informed them of all our visa status and issues, but they just gave us a regular license valid for 6-8 years.
It really makes a joke of the whole process!!!
