I'm AOS and thinking about moving to Georgia. Are there any difficulties in immigrants in this situation getting a drivers license?

Thanks for any help,

becky

I do not see any problem in getting a driver's license. After 9.11 DMV become a little strickter with foreigners. In south carolina I will have to show them my EAD and applied driver's license valid for the period of EAD's validity only after my previous driver license expired after its five year lifespan. Hopefully in George situation is the same or similar.

Good luck.

Does that mean that your driver's license have to be renewed every year?

I just renewed my DL in Atlanta last week. No problem for immigrants. You need to have your current DL and social security card ready. If new address, you also need two credit card statement and utility bill. No GC or passport needed. DL expires in 4 years.

If you don't havd SS card, you need a letter from SS office stating the reason they can't give you a SS#. The letter is very easy to get, but I doubt that applies to you. I have a friend from Brazil on F-1, he got the letter and DL in no time. But since he didn't have a US license before, he did need to show his passport and I-94.

Driver License Renewal

Does the DMV verifiy your SSN for renewal ? I need to renew my DL and don't have my SS Card since its got lost and believe that I can give my SSN at the time of Renewal and they can look it up in there system if they like , I believe they have access to the SSN database am I correct ?

Thanks for your Reply anyone !

DL is totally controlled by state government and the process is quite different from state to state.
My experience only applies to those in Georgia:

My DL expires next month, so I went to a local DMV office two weeks ago. The last time I renewed was in 2000 and before 9/11/2001. At that time it only required the old DL and a couple credit card statements indicating your new address.

So this time, to be safe I brought everything I can think of: passport, greencard, SS card, current DL, a couple credit card statements.

I told the receptionist I wanted to renew DL. He asked for the current DL and SS card, and nothing else. He said I needed to pay 15 bucks.

When I got to the windows, I needed to take an eyesight exam (looking into some microscope and read the numbers) and showed the officer my credit card statements with new address.

Nothing else was asked and they seemed not care about your immigration status. The new DL lasts 4 years.

One of the easiest state for DL

I just renewed mine. Only your old DL and the SSN #(Card not required). I was even changing the Address. No address proof was required.

Not sure about a New License.

Thanks

To everyone for their responses. It's good to know that GA is not like PA DMV. The only thing that's good about immigration is finding a community as helpful as you all,
