Does TN need EAD?

I recently got my first TN.

I went to the social security office (who probably get very few legal alien cases to deal with) to get my SSN and they said that I need a I-688B EAD or I-766 EAD Card and that it should be in the post to me in the next few days?

I haven't seen anything metioned about this before? Are they right?

They're not right, they're typical government public worker office monkey morons. I applied for my SSN right after getting my first TN back in 2005.

Typically, after getting your TN you should wait approximately 2 weeks to apply for your SSN so that your newly aquired TN status can show up in the system. If you apply for an SSN IMMEDIATELY after getting your TN you could face lengthy wait times of up to, from what i've heard, 4 months.

I mistakingly applied for my SSN right after getting my TN back in '05 and had to wait about 1 month for my SSN card to come in (I was VERY fortunate). See, if you apply for SSN immediately after getting your TN, your TN status won't show up in the database or whatever, and therefore they will need to do a manual search (which is what takes them so long). If you wait about 2 weeks to apply for SSN, your status as a TNer should be in the system and thus is easy to verify and grant you an SSN.

In short, wait about 2 weeks before applying for SSN.

Hope this helps,

John

Usually I've found the people at SS were quite knowledgeble about status and such. Sometimes even more so then the INS at times, but yes, this one doesn't do them justice. They definatly got confused about your status (probably someone new working)...
