Does one have to enter Canada for Landing?

Hi. I have a question for the Gurus on this forum. Is it necessary to enter Canada after landing as PR or can one just go to the Canadian border post (from the US), complete the paper work for landing, apply for PR and come back to the US from there (without actually going beyond the Canadian custom post). I understand that in this case, you probably won't be able to apply for the SIN, but would that be a big problem or it that something that you can do after a few months (after getting the PR card).
Any advice would be really appreciated.

It OK for doing that.
but, you need to provide your friend's address(in Canada) where the PR card will be sent by mail .
