Does Name Change delay N400 processing?

Hi,

My husband is planning to file for US Citizenship shortly. Does indicating a name change on the N400 application in any way delay the N400 processing timeline?

We will be filing out of NY.

Thanks in advance!

It won't delay the interview date, but it might increase the time between the interview date and oath date by 1 or 2 months, because only judicial oaths can include the name change, and judicial oath ceremonies are held less frequently than regular administrative oaths.

However, if in your location all oaths are judicial oaths, there would be no difference.

Note that if the name change is done in court independently of the citizenship process, that in itself can take a couple of months, in addition to costing hundreds of dollars.

In my case I think it did.

I am from NYC and I also went through name change. I filed my application in early January, had interview in late May and took oath in late June. From what I saw among timelines here, it seems like some people finished their processes in as few as three months.

Some people take 3 months, but 4-5 months is more typical, and if I remember right NYC is a bit slower than average.
