Me and my wife interview schdules soon..

We just find out that our marriage certificate got mis-placed, we couldn't find the original. We do have the copy though. Meanwhile I am trying to get the duplicate (or another original) from India, where we have registered (got the originial) the marriage.

Could you please share your experinces or openions whether marriage ceritificate (original) is a must for interview?

Can we manage with the copy of the ceritificate?

For your information, my GC is employ based, my wife is a dependent. We have bee married before coming to US iteself. She is still with her mainden name. She is thinking of changing her maiden last name to my last name during interview.

Please let me know how important the original marriage certificate in our case.

Thanks in advance for your time.

Thanks,
SRK

I don't think that should matter. IIRC the only time you would need a marriage cert is if you were applying based on 3 yrs (marriage to a USC).

Correct me if I am wrong.

Well, when I went to my Interview and I got here on a CG through Marriage but applied after being here for almost 7 years so I applied on the 5 Year stay I took all sorts of papers and nothing was ask for. Not even a Birthcertificate for my daughter that was born during the N-400 Process. I have heard People being ask .. actually the person who went in 20 min before me but I am not sure what his was based on.

I always think you don't need to bring more then it is ask for BUT on the other hand I think it all depends on the IO.

Don't mention that you misplaced it, don't say anything about it and when he ask for it tell him .....

Mostly you wouldn't need it for 5yr natz, but sometimes an enthusiastic IO might ask for it anyway.

Even if you get thousands of responses telling you that a Marriage Certificate wasn't demanded/asked in their case, yet still noone could guarantee that it won't be asked in your case. Just don't forget the fact that each immigration officer is different and unique. So obviously, their way of doing things and modus operandi are different too. Some are easy going than others. Some don't ask anything, while others drill on every single and little-little information.

That being said, if someone's interview experience has been a piece of cake or if s/he wasn't asked this and that then that doesn't mean your interview experience would exactly be the same. It could be, but noone can tell/guarantee you for sure. That's why common sense prevails here that applicants should always prepare themselves WELL for the interview, without leaving any room for ifs, buts, ors, could, should, would, etc.....

Thus, just try your best to obtain a duplicate copy of your Marriage Certificate, if you could; otherwise don't make a big fuzz about it because I personally don't think it would be asked in your case given the nature of your case. And even if it would be asked for, a copy of it would do the trick for sure that I can gurantee to....

Good luck...

That is basically what I meant to say. I brought a stack of papers not just with my Name on it but also with my Husbands and my Childrens just in case because I am a Homemaker and I didn't want to be ask how I support myself and have no proof you know what I mean.

Like it was said before. Every IO has it's own method of doing the Interview. Some might just fly through the application while others drill to down to the core. You just never know.

I would try to obtain a copy. If it is not possible and you will be ask for it at the Interview then just explain and try harder to obtain on later.

If your wife has a Social Security card under her married name, it is a Federal document that was established based on the Marriage Certificate. During the time you are waiting for a duplicate of your Marriage certificate, this probably is the most credible evidence of your marriage while you are waiting for a duplicate Marriage certificate to be sent. Granted the IO may request the Marriage certificate and continue (i.e. temporarily stop) your application until you have received the duplicate of the Marriage certificate. I would recommend you to keep a copy of your request for a duplicate.

Here is an update:

I got the another certificate from the marrige register (Like some of you suggested I was trying to get another copy). This one was completely different with that of the first original.

We are planning to go with copy of first original and latest original certificate incase of any questions.

Hope it won't be any issue.

Thanks a lot for your responses.
