Does change of Visa Status from H1B, reset the 6yr clock?

Hello Gurus,
If my current H1B reaches the 6yr limit, can I change my visa status to F1 or H4 for an year and remain in the US, and then apply for a new H1B that will can be used upto 6yrs?
or do I have to leave the country and come back after 1 year (that would suck!) ?

No. Only physical absence from US for 1 year or more resets the 6 year H1 clock.
