My interview was over on 09/28/05 but the online case status still says "Case transferred to Dallas District Office on 11/08/04 for interview blah blah blah". Does on line case status ever get updated after the interview at local office?

That didn;t happen in my case at least. After the case goes to the local office, the only way to find out status is an infopass appointment. At that too, the status may not be correct unless u get some info from the immigration officer who interviewed you.

BTW, what did they say after the interview ? Is your name check complete ? When did u do the biometric ?

Biometrics

During the interview, we were told our cases are approvable but has to wait for visa numbers to be available.
Name check completed in 2003 itself.
FP2 completed in July 2005. Finger printing of index finger and signature obtained on I-551 by the officer at the start of the interview. The officer was planning to use the photographs submitted with our I-485 application for the card. So I guess there is no need for separate biometrics.

No.

The only approval that might show up is after approval, if they were able to issue the Green-Card plastic with the underlying I-485 receipt number. In many cases, like mine, they may totally start afresh with an I-181, in which case your I-485 online status will never get updated, whereas your I-181 will show update saying, "it is approved."
