Does approval take 180 days after RFE?

I received an RE for birth certificate on Dec 18, 2000 and responded to it on Jan 3, 2001. INS has updated its AM, but it mentioned "I-485 preliminary processing is complete. Your case will take 180 days to process". Is that truly the case from your experiences?

You should expect approval any time. Usually it does not take more than a few days after RFE response is received.

When every category had become current in August \'99, I was keen to apply but did not have my birth certificates. My attorney advised that we file it anyway because INS accepts 485 applications without birth certs. We were expecting an RFE and did get one on Dec 18.

Responding to the RFE, I sent my original birth cert from India. My wife did not have one, so we got a notarized document from her hometown government office stating that her birth records did not exist. Her mother therefore wrote an affidavit on legal bond paper stating her birth date.
