There is no hard and fast rule for either filing. Don't risk sitting at home and apply at least 100 days prior to current expiration so that if the EAD is not renewed within 90 days, you can go through the process of getting an interim-EAD from Houston office (which might take you 3-4 days)
I applied eEAD for my spouse on march 14 '04 and received the card last week -- iEAD seems like good idea for people waiting for more than 6 months . Although nobody looks forward to going to USCIS office -- .
Our 3rd EAD ( my husband's and mine) were filed together same day with RD Jan 30, 2004. The applications and the payment checks went in the same envelope.Mine got approved on March 9th whereas my husband's got approved recently on May 17th. That too after several faxes to TSC and then called up the famous 800 number and finally they raised an inquiry since it is 30 days past the current EAD processing date which I believe is March 15.
