It may be the day you entered in USA. I know cases where people renewed their H1\'s with the time added for their vacation they took during the last 6 years. Actually there are many opinions for this and the widely believed is that the time you are on active payroll is the time served for h1.

The counter starts the day you eneter US and by default your short absences are not taken out unless it is more than 1 year. But if your lawyer provide additional information they can take out the time spent elsewhere. This is not legal advice but the conclusion I draw from my case. I stayed in India for 6 - 7 months dureing the six years. When INS extended my H1 for the second time they put the last date exactly after 6 years of my first entry. My lawyer is confident that she can get it extemded for another 6-7 months.
