Do you need to inform employer when you apply for N-400

Do you have to inform your employer about your N-400 process ? It may be necessary to inform the company HR after the approval process as you may get access to restricted jobs otherwise reserved for USCs. Other than this, do you need to inform when you apply and during its process ? After finger printing, there may be FBI background investigation or whatever so is it better to inform the company that such an enquiry may come.

I would rather keep this process private if tell them only if it necessary. But when you take time-off for finger printing and interview, you have to tell a reason to your boss so in that case you have to tell to your boss and co-workers regarding N-400 process. Any comments ?

Thanks

you could info to your HR after you got your citizenship if it will life up the restriction for certain jobs only for USC.

No need to let them know of your intentions beforehand, unless they had some imminent plans to send you overseas for an extended period, etc.

Afterwards, you should let them know once you're a citizen so that they can update your I-9 that they're supposed to have a record of. Employers must have the I-9 on file for all employees, even U.S. citizens. This is filled out once you start employment and should be updated whenever your immgration status changes (i.e. non-immigrant -> permanent resident -> citizen).

Thanks for the response.

More questions:

When you go to finger printing or the interview, is it ok to take the kids with you. I have two little kids, not sure whether there are any restrictions in taking the kids with you. Also are there any dress codes for interview ?

The ASC I went to would have probably allowed this at the time as it was pretty empty. I was in and out within not much more than 10 minutes. I was told I was very lucky, as sometimes the wait could apparently be 2 or 3 hours. On those days I imagine the waiting area would be filled up and they'd probably not all too many extra people in (there were maybe 50-60 chairs). In fact, my fingerprint letter warned that seating was limited.

If I was you, I wouldn't count on being able to bring your children in since there's no way for you to predict the day-by-day situation at your specific ASC.

Business casual attire for the interview is fine.. I saw other dressed up more, and others who were just in jeans. I don't think I'd go too casually dressed as you are at an interview where your credibility is being assessed.

Hi,

I have a very similar situation i.e., two kids. My wife and I submitted our FP at the Fort Worth ASC on 05/05/05. We had our kids with us on that day and nobody at the ASC said a thing. We took turns watching the kids and submitting FP. Also, on that day the place was kind of empty and we were in and out in no more than 20-25 minutes.

However, my wife was required to resubmit her FP on 06/22/05. On that day, though the place was relatively empty, the receptionist said that I would have to wait outside with the kids, while my wife submitted her FP. I personally thought that it was uncalled for because there were plenty of empty chairs in the lobby. I suppose it was a matter of principle with her. Of course the boilerplate text on the FP notice said to not bring anyone else because of limited lobby seating space. So, I guess the answer in a word is, YMMV!!.

As far as dress code for the interview, I have seen it written on some of the threads that you cannot go wrong wearing some kind of business attire.
