How many years have to pass before the asylee can go back to his own country or to leave the USA to visit another country not his own?

Are poor economic condition due to the Asian economic crisis and some political instability and terrorist attack happening within the year, a good reason to apply for asylum?

First of all, you have to apply for asylum within a year of arrival to the USA. If you have been living her for more than one year just forget about this route. Second, economic hardship or political unrest are not sufficient reasons for you to be granted asylum. The only way you can be granted asylum is to document that your life is in imminent danger if you decide to go back to your country. Third, even if your application was approved and you were granted asylum, you will have to wait 10 years until you get your green card (this figure will be doubled in the next few years if Congress does not act). Sounds gloomy? Yes it does but remember we are immigrants and we do not really have many choices. If you are looking to stay in the USA and are trying to find a way to do so, think of marrying a beautiful American girl or think of another way to do it such as lottery or employment sponsoring. This way you will spare yourself the hardache and at the same time give a chance to those who really deserve to be granted asylum. Good luck my friend

I've been here for 6 years, so asylum is out. Marriage is also out since I'm not ready for another 10 yrs. H1-B is my best choice. Is there a good website that only shows listing of H1-B sponsor jobs? Monster and Hotjobs are all i know and the listing usually say they don't sponsor. I'm in the technical/engineer field.
Can you provide me with the website that states I have to apply within the 1st year of entering the USA? Because I have doubts.

Good luck my friend

I see so there is no rule that I have to apply within a year. I looking for a statement like on .gov website but if it does not exists, it is still a possibility.

By law you have to apply for asylum within one year unless one of the limited exceptions applies to you (such as sudden and recent change in the conditions of your country or if you were a child).

Even if you fail to qualify for an exception but have a strong asylum case, the INS will give you something called withholding of removal which allows to work here until conditions improve in your country.

Look here and you will know who has sponsored in the past, giving you some indication who may be able to sponsor in the future. zazona

Thanks, this is the information I needed but the wesite has links to anti-alien workers, is it reliable?

digicube,

Shamshon is partially right regarding the 1 year limit. There are some exemption to it.

For me, I applied for asylum in March 2002, and I have been here since August 1996. If your current status is F1 (student visa) or H1B (temporary visa), for example, you are exempted from the 1 year limit. I came to the US for my higher education in August 1996 with an F1 visa. After I graduated in 1998, I applied for H1B visa. I have been in H1B status until I received my ayslee status.
So, long story short. you can apply for ayslum if you fall into one of the exemption categories even after 1 year.

Of course, I applied for ayslum last year so you should consult with your lawyer to verify if the rules remain the same.

Hope this help.
