Do we really need an attorney to file for 7th year H1B extension?

I know this question may look silly. I didn't see any thread related to this.

I need to file for a 7th year extension (both H1 and H4). I checked with couple of lawyers and they are charging too much. ($1500). Is this the normal rate? Do we really need an attorney to file for extension?

Please share your experience if you have applied it by yourself.

attorney charges

my attorney is charging $2400 for filing 7th year extension. I'm thinking of renouncing H1 and switch to EAD. thy are just ripping me off.

My only worry is if something goes wrong with I-485 (denied), then EAD will become invalid and we will be out of status. I am not sure whether motion to appeal will make EAD valid to continue our work.

Can anyone through some light on this?
