Hi,

Being in the state of limbo (I-485 pending), do we qualify for federal or state aid when we are struck by some disaster (natural or not) which qualifies for aid? Do we have any disadvantage compared to GC holders or citizens or even illegal immigrants?

thanks

We were trying for student loan for my wife. We were told that we have to be either a citizen or GC holder to qualify for federal loan. So I guess the same could apply for any other aid. Having said that I hope you have not incurred any misfortunes.

Being in the state of limbo (this time I am refering to California) anything could happen, like wild fires, earthquakes etc. I am just checking if it is wise to buy property while I485 is pending.

Anyone knows for sure?

thanks

There are some people who are always afraid of something. Sorry, but you seems to fall under this category. I have couple of friend like you. Be brave and enjoy life.

As to buying the property, have you heard of something called "insurance" which can cover you in case of disaster. Buying adequate insurance will buy you peice of mind.

I bought my first house (in CA bay area) within 1 and 1/2 year of coming to US. People discouraged me a lot (I was on H1). But, that turned out to be the best decision of my life( sold at 100% tax free profit and bought another house 4 years ago. this one has appreciated a lot already).

What type of federal aid do you have in mind? Federal aid in form of soft loans is usually available when a big disaster hits the whole big geographical area.

I don’t think we are qualified for any aid, better take property insurance with proper coverage that can pay you back every penny if disaster hits.
