Do visitor visa applicants need to have airline booking

HI

My in-laws are planning to visit us here in US from India. They will be going to the Calcutta consulate. Do they need to have a confirmed airticket booking and/or reservation? I have found the information for other necessary documents on the web. I have not seen anything regarding a booking or itinerary.
