Do IO's check your tax history before the interview on their own?

I was in school the last two years and didn't make much, and did not have to file. I was wondering if they check with IRS, as there would be no records for the last two years. I have been out of the states around 140 days in the last 5 years. Just wondering should I go ahead and fine now.
 
DO asked me if I filed taxes for the last 5 years and if I owed money to the IRS. I had 5 years of tax history with me, but was never asked to show it.
