Do I need visa to transit through UK with GC

I have a GC and I will be travelling through London on my India trip and have a 20-hour layover. Can I apply for a transit visa at Heathrow and spend the night in a hotel or I have to stay in the airport all that time. Does anybody know or have actual experience? Thanks.

You will not need a transit visa provided:
1. You do not have to go through British immigration
2. You must have a plastic green card issued on or after 4/21/98. It cannot be a passport stamp.

Here is the webpage to their LA Consulate. I got a transit visa as my plastic card hadn't arrived when I booked my ticket.
