Do I need to wait until I got the GC before I leave US

I've just got my DV (thank god!) and I'm planning to go to US in September to activate my green card, but then I haven't quitted my job yet and I need to off load my assets in my home country etc. I can only get 10 days of annual leave to go to US and must come back. I have a big project on hand and can only leave my home country and move to US by February 2011.

From this forum seems it will take at least 2-3 weeks to receive the GC by post... Can I leave US before I get the GC?

please post this quiz in Ghana, Nigerian or Kenyan thread. there are some experts in there who can be of help to you.

A Re-entry Permit is a document issued by the USCIS to lawful permanent residents ("green card" holders) as a travel document. Green card holders use re-entry permits to re-enter the U.S. after travel of one year or more. A re-entry permit does NOT take the place of your "greencard," nor of your passport. Instead, you use a Re-entry Permit IN ADDITION to your greencard, and passport. For green card holders returning to the U.S., re-entry permits are generally valid for two years from the date of issuance of the re-entry permit. A green card holder should apply for this benefit before leaving the U.S.

I just leave US for less than half year and will then go back. Do I still need an re-entry permit?
I can just stay in US for 10 days during my first entry in September....
Actually the GC will be sent to my relative's home upon issuance, and I will ask him to send that to me which I have returned to my home country. Is it ok?

While outside the US, if you have someone who will receive your GC on your behalf at the address provided on the form DS-230, then you can use the visa stamped on your passport to travel for one year without the need for reentry permit. Alternatively, you can let the person who will receive your GC in the US to post it to you at your country so that you can use it to travel back to the US.
