do I need to register for selective services?

When i turned 26, I was on a F-1 visa as a student having recently come to the US.
Do I still need to apply for Selective services? if so when..
I will be applying for citizenship next year...

If you are a male and as long as you are in a lawful non-immigrant status when you turned 26..the answer is NO. For more information look at www.sss.gov . You may want to get a status letter for your record (comes in handy when you apply for any federal govt job and/or aid).

i am in the same boat with the original poster. however, how could i get a letter for the record? I was under H1 when I turned on 26 and sure I did not even hear about selective services at all.

Sure, you can a letter stating that you weren't required to register. I've gotten such a letter, for my peace of mind.
There is a pdf on the Selective Services website (www.sss.gov), that you just fill out and send in, together with some evidence, like copies of the visa stamps.
