Do I need to apply a new H stamp?

I changed my status to H1 within US; i.e. NO visa stamp on my passport. May I travel to Canada, only for a few days, and re-enter US without applying a visa stamp, just using the H1 approval documents and valid I-94? -- I know if you have an expired visa stamp you would be OK, but not sure about the change of status situation.
