You will be requested to take IELTS so you might as well take it. These days unless your native tongue is English and that was the language at home and as well as all your school, there is a very good chance that CHC will request IELTS results. TOEFL result will not be recognized.

Hi PMM,
Thanks for the Info.

1) What IELTS score i need to qualify for HIGH in english proficiency (16 ponits). (7/9 ??)

2) I checked the IELTS.org website and it seems like the speaking test can be done before or after the exam (upto 7 days). Dont they conduct on the same day? any info on it?

3) Could you point me to any IELTS preparation websites or resources or documents?

Thanks.

1) You will have to score at least 7 in each section to get the max 16 points

2) I gave IELTS in Chicago and the speaking test was the same day after completing the other three sections. Check the center where you are going to appear to find out when they conduct the speaking test.

3) I consulted the Cambridge IELTS 3rd Edition. There is a lot of information on the web so just google for IELTS. Some links:

I am currently waiting to get a date for interview in New York City. Following is my timeline:

Applied - Dec 2003
AOR - Jan 2004
IA - Aug 2004
Interview Required in NY
Medical done March 2005
IELTS score sent April 2005
File transfered to NYC in July 2005
Sent additional documents and RPRF Aug 2005

Kenny04,
Thanks for the detailed timeline. I am very new to this process. I am learning more and more everyday. I just went through QUEBEC immigration and it seems faster than Federal processing.

1) How long does the process normally takes (Federal) assuming that i will submit the IELTS score along with the initial documents and being single? (just provide a value depening on your exp)

2) Is there any expiration date for IELTS score?

3) Did u go through a lawyer?

4) It seems QUBEC immigration is quite faster than Fereal processing. I think FRENCH is mandatory for it. I dont mind learning through a professional center if the process is quite faster. I already located a professional language center in my place. Do you recommend QUBEC immigration?.

Thanks.

Currently from Buffalo it is taking on an average 19 to 32 months to complete the process. It is difficult to predict how long it will take as there are so many factors involved. In general if your application is well documented you can expect to get interview waiver. If you get interview waiver your processing time will be shorter.

2) Is there any expiration date for IELTS score?
If you appear in IELTS now you should be fine.

3) Did u go through a lawyer?
Yes. But it is not worth it. You can do it on your own.

The primary language in Quebec is french so if you are planning to apply for Quebec immigration you have to be proficient in French.

I have no idea about Quebec immigration so maybe someone else can help you with that.

Thanks for the info. It is helpful. Though application process is straightforward i want to go through the lawyer to make my case stronger. I am getting 68 points intotal. Since it is very close to 67 i better go through the lawyer. I am planning to take the test on Oct 15th and submit documents in NOV 1st week.I dropped the option of QUEBEC immigartion since it requires FRENCH.

1) Lawyer is charging me $1595. How about your lawyer?

2) What documents you produced for WORK Experience?

3) Do i need to produce TAX RETURNS from india? (I worked for 8 months there. I dont have  )

Thanks.

Do not wait till Nov to send in your application just because of IELTS. My suggestion is that you should send your application as soon as it is ready. Send in your application with an English proficiency letter. This way at least you will be in queue.

1) Lawyer is charging me $1595. How about your lawyer?

That’s approx the same amount I paid.

2) What documents you produced for WORK Experience?

Reference letters, tax returns, pay stubs etc. The more documents you provide the better chances you will have to get interview waiver.

3) Do I need to produce TAX RETURNS from India? (I worked for 8 months there.)

Get whatever you possibly can to prove that you worked for 8 months in India.

I can not apply befor October 05. As per the canadian gov, applicant need to have 1 yr of UNINTERRUPTED work exp with one company in the whole work experience. I will be having on Nov 1st. Having said that i can only apply in Nov05. So i want to take the test before it and submit score along with the application. I need to 16 points in english skill to get 67 points. So it is vital for me to score 7 in each section.

1) What type of IELTS exam is acpeted by canadian gov.ie...GENERAL or ACADEMIC IELTS test? (i think GENERAL and want to make sure before i send the application form)

2) How do I submit the score to candian gov? Just send a photocopy of the score or request the IELTS org to send the score report?

3) I dont have TAX returns for the job i did in INDIA. Does it going ot be a issue? :( I have paystubs, expr letter, ref letter, visiting card etc.)

4) What score u got in each section of IELTS? How much time u spent on preparation?

General

Send original, as you won't have a file number to give to IELTS org. to send too.

maybe.

The minimum requirement to apply as a Skilled Worker is at least 1 year of work experience. This one year of experience does not have to be in just one company - if you have worked in 2 companies for 6 months each it is fine. Just curious you mentioned in your first post that you have been working for 15 months in US  . Even if some of the experience is part-time you can count that towards your work experience.

GENERAL

Like PMM said you will have to send the original score.

Send in whatever you have.

4) What score u got in each section of IELTS? How much time u spent on preparation?
My score was :
Listening - 8
Reading - 7
Writing - 8
Speaking - 9

As I mentioned earlier I consulted the Cambridge IELTS 3rd Edition. Practice a lot and get used to the format of the exam.

Here is what my laywer emailed me after going through my work experience:

There is an actual rule and requirement that states an applicant must have 1 continuous uninterrupted year of employment (365 days), within their overall work history. (Note: normal vacations, weekends and holidays are NOT
considered to be interruptions).

This means, for example, if hypothetically someone worked for 10 years,
but quite their job every 11 months, took some time off, and then
obtained a new job, they would not qualify for Canadian Immigration.
Despite their 10 years of work, they do not have 365 days of continuous
uninterrupted employment.

I have been on job from July 2004 to present. But i changed my employer in oct05 without any timeoff. I think i should be eligible. :) Anyway i will talk to him.

I dont agree with what your lawyer has told you. It is mentioned clearly on the CIC website that an applicant "must have at least one year of full-time work experience" and the applicant "must have been paid for this work".

http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/skilled/qual-2.html

Nothing is mentioned about continuous and uninterrupted work experience. But I may be wrong.

Just to get professional advice post this querry on the following board. A very helpful immigration consultant (Mr. Andrew Miller) answers questions there and he will be able to give you the most accurate advice. All the best.

Kenny04,
I spoke to the Lawyer and he suggested me to wait Until Nov05 so that i can show a total of 2 yrs exp which is a must for me to qualify for 67. Also i am planning to take test in Oct and submit the score report along with the initial documents. I am not sure about the rule he mentioned. Since i decided to wait until Nov05 i did nt stress on that issue much.

I would like to talk to you on IELTS and some other isses. Can you provide me your contact details by sending a private message to me through this forum? OR i can send my contact details to your private messages. Let me know whether you are comfortable with it.

Thanks.

Sorry Kenny here is what the manuals say:

"9.1. Minimum requirements of a skilled worker
The officer reviews the applicant’s work experience to determine if the applicant meets the
minimum requirements to apply as a skilled worker, as stipulated in R75.
The applicant must have at least one year of continuous full-time paid work experience, or the
continuous part-time equivalent, that:
• is in the category of Skill Type 0, or Skill Level A or B, according to the Canadian National
Occupational Classification (NOC);
• occurred within 10 years preceding the date of application;
• is not in an occupation that is considered a restricted occupation. At the time of printing, there
were no occupations designated as restricted. However, for the most up-to-date listing, refer
to the Skilled Worker Web site at www.cic.gc.ca/skilled.
