Do I have to work in the same position until I get GC?

I filed my GC in 1997. The Job Description in Labor Certification is now old. (It has been four years now!!!) I have filed I-485 and 180 days have passed.

Does INS still expect me to work for the same position with no room for growth?

What I get is the normal living adjustment (so-called raise / increment). But for my career growth I should be taking up more challenging jobs within the same company.

Can I not take some other job openings in the same company?

Please advise... I am stuck in the same rung of ladder and tired of stagnation. At the current rate my GC will take at least a year.

Please help....

From what my lawyer told me, no...

I asked my lawyer the same question, he said no with the following caveat: Your new position should require you to do all the duties in the labor certification, and more. i.e. you have to be doing the stuff in the LC, there is no problem with doing more. Also, your title should not become very different, e.g. Engineer to Sr. Engineer is just fine, but Engineer to Manager may not be.
