Hi everyone,

Can you please tell me if I have a chance if I apply for permenant residency through NIW, based on my qualifications.

1) Not from a retrogressed country
2) MS and PhD from US universities (physics)
3) 9-month postdoc experience at a prestigious university in Paris, France (funded by French government)
4) Currently a postdoc at one of the top 20 research universities in the US (NIH funded, biomedical engineering)
5) 5 papers in international journals ( 3 first authored); all are within last 3 years
6) 15 citations
7) occasional reviewer for 2nd tier journals in my field
8) 17 conference papers (15 first authored, 8 international conferences)
9) memberships: Sigma Pi Sigma National Honor Society, and one paid membership (waiting for Sigma xi )
9) So far 7 people have agreed to give me letters (from 3 different countries including US and from 3 states in the US)

Should I hire a lawyer or are there people who sucesfully applied without a lawyer? Any advice will help me a lot.

Thank you in advance.

Chances are seems to be fair,

Do it through a lawyer. Though you'll be doing most of the work, they'll make sure that you don't miss anything.

Can anyone else help

Thank you niwseek.
One more question.

When I hire a lawyer, can I add a time limit to the contract? ( are there other things that a client should include in the contract)

You should consult someone who has worked with a lawyer.

Your question is not clear. If you are saying that you want to insert a "deadline" for approval forget it, timeline for approval cannot be predicted and as far as I know no lawyer will take that responsibility.

There are however, certain lawyers who break down the fee for pre approval and post approval. If your petition fails, then you don't pay the post approval fee.

One other thing, don't depend on forums too much. It might be a lawyers agent just trying to convince you. Or in worse case, it can be a person from a hate group just trying to mess your plans. Best opinions comes from the people who has already gone through this. If you are in a Uni or Lab, there should be atleast a few.
