I am an asylee . I have my professional driving licence from my country.it is explained in 3 languages this is driving licence (English,french,russian)
I was thinking iam gonna pass a computer based test and i will get my DC driving licence . Unfortunately my attempt was not Succesful this time. DMV officer wanted me to bring translated head letter from my Embassy which proves this is a driving licence. I told her i am political asylee i cannot bring you any letter from my embassy . After longtime silence She replied me otherwise u have to pass driving permit test etc. My friend got their driving licences without any Head letter from embassy . I think i was on wrong time in wrong place and wrong DMV officer room#1. i was in DC DMV when i had F1 visa last year and they were ready to put me on computerbased exam without any head letters My friends they are asylees,H1 they got their driving licences without any letters from embassy .

I am sure if i go there after a few weeks they are not gonna ask me any letters . I think DC DMV officers afraid to make a decision because they are not educated to do that job.
I have a friend who is an asylee when he wanted to get american driving license DMV officer looked through his approval letter and told him bring me updated I 94 (it is expired)
i am gonna wait and go a after a fews weeks when they are really busy so i can get through those officers.

Wait I am confused. Why do you need your Foreign drivers license? If you know how to drive..which you do right? then you need to pass the computerized exam and the behind-the-wheel exam and get your license...

Its not like the officer failed to accept your papers right?..I mean maybe i am stupid but IF i have a drivers license from France..it doesn't give me the right to get an american license right?....You still have to pass the exams as most americans do..right?...

Help me out here I am confused..

Spare yourself the aggravation and go through their tests. They are very vigilant after 9/11

IF You have your foreign driving licence .Normally u should only pass Computerbased exam which takes 10 minutes . and u get your American driving licence .
The main problem for me to get letter from my embassy about validity of my driving licence. As you know embassy is not a good place to be for ASYLEE.
I think i am gonna pass full driving test and computer based exam (it will take time )

Actually the exchanging of foreign DLs for an American one depends on the country and whether or not an agreement exists between the USA and that country. There is a list out there somewhere that has the names of all the countries that take part in the 'exchange' of DLs.

In either case, if you can't exchange your DL, you might want to get a new one. If you have had driving experience, it shouldn't be too difficult to get an American DL.
