Divorce after conditional GC

I have a very importatnt question.. Its for my friend
He got married to US citizen and got conditional GC. But unfortunately his marriage is gowing down. What happens if he gets a divorce before filing for removal of conditions? The marriage is bonafide. They know each other for more than 3 years before marriage and both are financially independent. Can he apply for removal of conditions himself? Any suggestions in this matter is grately appreciated.
