Difference between Service Center and District Office

Do you know what is the difference between District Office and Service Center(VSC), both process AP,EAD and I-485 processing ?

For example if disctrict office has I-485 processing date of May 28,2003
and VSC has I-485 of Jan 21,2002, What does it mean ? gurus?
 
Service center- everything is by post.
District office is the state HQ office which accepts both postal and walk in applications.
Only a select few cases are eligible to submit their applications at the district (or sub or other Application) offices.
Take some time to read what applications can be filed where by visiting the uscis.gov site and click on field offices.
