We had our interview done today (June 21, 2005). We both passed the exam. The interviewer went one by one asking same questions from the N-400 form to verify your answers against what you filed. For my case, everything was going smooth until he asked me if I have been cited....etc. I said, yes and it was for speeding and showed him my drivering record as a proof of my payment and no drugs or alcohol are involved (got it from secretary of state). He took a look at the record and found that my name is registered as a Voter. Then he asked me why did you register for voting. I said, I never did and it must have been a mistake by the secretary of state. He said since he saw that, now I need to submit evidence needed on the FormN-14. He gave me the form N-14 and an enevelop to mail it back to Detroit office along with another letter stating that I passed the exam and futher evidence is requested.

He said as it seems there is no ill intent from your part, you are not disqualified but a decision will be made only after you submit the requested evidence.

The evidence is a sealed and signed letters from Twp clerk showing that "I never voted", "my name is deregisted" from voters list and "Twp is not contemplating any charges against me". I straightaway went to twp and got those letters in five minutes and mailed them back to them today.

Did anybody go through the same thing? How long will this delay my Oath Ceremony?

that is kind of scary to see "Twp is not contemplating any charges against me". for what? for never voted? or it is a geneal statement saying no crim / no charges were made aginst you in the township?

excuse my ignorance, but what is TWP?

The immigration officer said that it is not a big thing and he has never seen anybody prosecuted for this matter. As I said I went to the township (TWP) rightaway. They pulled up my voting history which is blank as I expected and gave me printouts of voting history, and deregisteration letter as voter. They also put the raised seal and stamped seal on those letters. The TWP clerk office also gave me written letter on the TWP letter head stating that I never voted and the TWp is not contemplating any charges against me. I mailed those documents back to detroit office. Hope that will solve the problem.

TWP clerk people told this thing happened before and that person registered as voter when he is not supposed to and voted when he is not supposed. So that was considered as breaking the law and he will be prosecuted for this.

In my case I never intended to register but happened by mistake ( I dont know it was by me or by Twp). Twp already deregistered me from the voters list in the year 2003 but never updated my driving record. So the problem came when the immigration officer looked at my driving record. I guess I was caught in between two databases (TWP and Secretary of State) But the burden of proof is on me :( to come up with proper documentation needed to continue my application.

Lesson from this is please check your driving record and make sure you are not registered as a voter when you are not supposed to. That way you guys can avoid the headache and the raising the stress levels that I have to go through when the Officer told me about it.

Thanks. I had a MI DL before. I will check out my driving record from MI which shows the voter info.

All states have an office called STATE BOARD OF ELECTIONS where you can check whether you are registered as a voter.

Do a google/yahoo/search engine search of your state eg search 'Michigan State board of elections'

I checked Michigan and the site is http://sos.publius.org/

Here you can tell whether you are registered as a voter.Maybe thats the site USCIS uses.
