determination of prevailing wage with job description

How do I determing the prevailing wage, according to the job description? I already have the degree for the job, but I hear the prevailing wage is determined with the job description and not the degree held. (I.e. I have a BS in Mechanical Engineering, and prevailing wage doesnt have to be under 'Mechanical Engineer')
