In 1997, I tried to enter the USA with a fake ID. I was arrested, and later granted political asylum. My wife, who had a valid non-immigrant visa was driving the car as we tried to cross in from Canada. She was charged with aiding in illegal entry, but was later granted derivative asylum.

Here is my story if anyone is curious:

We sent in her N-400 application and it was officially received on Sep 24. She had her interview on Dec 29, and was approved, although the IO carefully questioned her about the incident and her aiding of illegal entry. He spent about 20 minutes going through the A-file before going to another room (I assume to talk to his supervisor) and came back to give her the good news.

She was asked about travel outside the USA during the green card (no travel) but no questions were asked about travel to COP.

The DO was Boston, and the most notable item was the fact that the person conducting the civics/history test had such a thick accent my wife had to ask him to repeat two questions.

My turn is coming up, and I will post my experience and timeline then. In the mean time, thanks to WantMyGCNow, BobSmyth, Jackolantern and others who answered my questions.

Happy New Year, and may 2010 bring you peace and joy, and successful resolution to your immigration issues (if any)
