Derivated Asylum

Hi Guys: I'm an asylee, I applied and had received approval for my 10 years old son, to follow me to America as derivative asylee.
My son wants to stay with her mother in my country for another 4 or 5 years before to come here. My question is: there is a time limit for the approval or can he use it any time?

I think is valid for 1 year I least that's what it said on my wife's approval back in 2001
