deportation

simple question, and just for hypothetical reasons. but say someone came to the US originally for a vacation on a visa waiver, met a girl, got married etc etc and applied for citizenship so he could be with her. but during the process, shortly after fingerprinting they brake up. If the guy is happy to go back to his country of origin what is the drawback from getting oneself deported rather then paying thousands of dollars on a plane ticket, i know it means never coming back to the US, but what if he never wants to?
What is the deportation process? is there any punishment in your home country or any type or jail time or anything?

There are some problems with your hypothetical Steve.

If you enter on the Visa Waiver program, you are not eligible to adjust or change status in the US. Period.

He would possibly be detained until he could be deported. USCIS often holds prisoners in the local county jails, which can be unpleasant to say the least.

Not aware of any punishment in the home country but I guess that is up to the particular country,
