Dementia and Political Asylum

My grandmother has Alzheimer's, almost progressing to dementia. My uncle had been taking care of her in Venezuela until September 2023, when she received travel authorization through the humanitarian parole process. He brought her to the U.S., entering on a B2 visa, and applied for asylum within the first six months.

He received his interview notice within three months, which made us worried that if we applied for my grandmother’s asylum, she would be called for an interview. Due to her condition, she wouldn't be able to go through the process.

Now, as her humanitarian parole is approaching expiration, we are exploring ways to keep her in the U.S. since she has no one to care for her in Venezuela. I am a U.S. citizen, and one of her daughters recently obtained a green card through marriage.

Can we still apply for her asylum and submit an explanation letter stating that we couldn't apply earlier due to her dementia?
