Delima DS-230 Vs. I-485

Good Morning Everyone,
I have a delima. My father has a 5 year visitor visa for USA. He visted us last winter (12/30/2008) and is back to his home country.
After he got back i filed I-130 and it got approved. Now NVC wants me to file affidavit of financial support and i believe DS-230 ($400).
Now my delima is after he gets an immigrant visa back home; do i again have to file I-485 (over $1000)?
If I have to file I-485; then DS-230 is useless since he already has a visa to come to USA.
Please advise what would be an appropriate path to take.
File DS-230 or have him come to USA and apply for adjustment of status?

It is one or the other and they are mutually exclusive. So either file for immigrant visa (DS230) from abroad or apply I-485 if he is in the USA on a valid non-immigrant visa.
