Hi All,
This is on behlaf of a friend who is facing a problem. Both he and his
wife are permanent residents (GC holders). They had to leave the
US last year because of a family medical emergency in India. Since they
expected to stay back in India for a while to help with recovery, they applied for reentry permit before leaving.
Even after 7-8 months, they have not received the reentry permit from
INS. When contacted, INS said it is taking more than a year
to process such an application.
Since they will be outside the US for a year already by November,
they are nervous of losing the GC status. US consulate in Chennai
responded to their concern by saying "make a trip to the US to keep
your status". Given the family situation and also because they are
expecting
to be new parents soon, it is very difficult for them to make a trip to the US in near future.
Is there any other way to keep the green card valid ? Are there any
avenues for an appeal since this is a special situation ? Does talking
to immigration attorneys or local senators office help here ? They are
really interested in staying in the US for the long term.
When I Googled for this topic, I found a site called
www.travelvisaexpress.com. They promise to expedite reentry
permit within 6 weeks. Any experience with them ?
I am eager to find any suggestions you may have.
Thanks,
Vijay
